Thoari - Thesis

2014

Thoari is a seating device that teaches Korean American youths how to familiarize themselves with a design stemming from their native land. It encourages them to remember and take pride in their heritage by delivering to them from miles away a piece of home.

Through my experiences in teaching Korean to Korean American kids at Manhattan Korean School [MKS], I constantly witnesses my students being reluctant to admit that they are Korean or even partially Korean.

This affected me very deeply and then I came across the Then I came across this essay written by Albert J. Lee. He makes a great point stating that the constant presence and preservation of Korean culture is a must for them to have a stronger Korean Identity. Then, I thought about their daily routine; what are they around all the time? Then, I thought of furniture!

Bangseok and Thoari are Korean traditional objects. I chose them as my precedents because I believe combining each object’s purpose into my design will help Korean American kids to familiarize themselves with design stemming from Korea.

Flexible polyurethane foam (FPF) affects our lives in many ways and new applications are rolling out on a regular basis. It is used as cushioning for a wide variety of consumer and commercial products including furniture, carpet cushion, transportation, bedding, packaging, textiles and fibers.

Thoari is also very 'mommy-friendly.' It is very easy to clean: detach the tail, wipe the cushion, and wash the tail in a laundry.

Soft + Strong Chair

2012

I always desire to be a woman who appears soft on the outside but strong on the inside. And automatically I suppressed my inner desire in this design. “Soft + Strong Chair” holds soft and gentle aesthetic, yet built strong with the use of mortise and tenon joinery which allows it to be a perfect candidate for a lounge chair.

These are the result of my primary sketches, study of ergonomics, several mock up models. During the study, I discovered 105 degree was a perfect angle for the lounge chair and applied that in my chair.

Cruisin' Dream

2013

Winter in NYC is brutal. Every winter I dreamed about cruising down the beach in California but in reality, I was still stuck in cold, snowy, winter weather in NYC.

“Cruisin’ Dream” is created with the desire of escaping from reality. “Cruisin Dream” is a bike lever and handle set I designed for my possible future cruiser bike. “Cruisin’ Dream” set is created through the software program SolidWorks. Then, 3D-printed to see how the bike lever and handle works. For possible materials, I choose beige color coated metal and a hand carved wooden handle that will go well with my dreamy future white cruiser bike.

The Last Touch

2013

"Every girl needs the last touch."

“The Last Touch” is a spray perfume with a sensor where it will be useful for the people who keep on forgetting to spray their perfume before they go out. Once you put your desired body part to be sprayed on in front of ¨The Last Touch,¨ it will automatically spray the perfume on to your aimed spot.

Through this project, I got to experience using an existing part and incorporate my design around it. I mastered Solidworks and absorbed as much information as I can with 3D printing.

One Sec Eyeline

“One Sec Eyeline” is a quick, fun project I did for teenage Asian girls to pursue their dream of transforming their eyes with this eyeliner guide.

Squeeze Me In

2015

After graduating college, reacquiring healthy body became my #1 priority. I started drinking detox juice every morning right before I head out for work. Three months in, I started skipping on detox juice in the morning but I really wanted to squeeze that time into my daily routine. Then, I started to look for the solution.

“Squeeze Me In” is an add-on component juicer to the universal mason jar. It allows users like me to squeeze their quick time into juicing. The process is very easy, quick and self-explanatory. “Squeeze Me In” will be a great addition to mason jar hack.

Glassuit

2013

“Glassuit” is a handmade luxury leather glasses case with an opening.

“Glassuit” is an everyday essential for both men and women. The glasses can be easily taken in and out of the glassuit through its opening and it also provides great protection. It comes with many different color variations and can be easily custom made with monograms.
